Twine made by Benjamin Lawrence, one of the eight survivors of the 20 man crew of the whaleship Essex, sunk by a sperm whale in 1819. Lawrence made the twine during the nearly three month travels in a whaleboat on the Pacific after the sinking of the Essex. It is now one of few items relating to the The Essex in the Nantucket Whaling Museum.
